The East Kent Mavericks Youth Team originally came about in August 2005, when a misprint in a news paper article recruiting players for the senior team resulted in several under 18's turning up to train! After talking to these players, it was believed that there was interest to start a Youth Team in the area. The main concern for starting the team was the question of coaches, with all of the senior team preoccupied with training for their first competitive year in the BAFL, none of the senior team players or coaches could be spared to help build the new youth program. After some chats and meetings, two new coaches were found to train the new Youth Team, Coach Jay Wood-Stoddard and Coach Cliff Reader. These two coaches, along with the then relatively small team of less than 10 members, the team started to learn the basics and understand the game.
After around 6 months of training there was however a clear 'split' in the team members with half of the players coming from the Deal and Sandwich area and half coming from Canterbury. It was therefore decided to separate the two teams and the Cinque port Monarchs based in Sandwich where born.
This was huge step backwards for the Maverick, losing several excellent players and 2 good coaches, however John Cassidy former head Coach of the Invicta Eagles and several new players joined the club and things where soon back on track. With recent sponsorship from Speedy Hire and several other local companies the Mavericks Youth Team were developing into a strong team and looking forward to their first competitive games.
In January 2007 Cliff Reader returned to the Mavericks Youth to resume coaching, and the club has continued to grow. Now boasting a Youth Flag Team and completely independant Youth kitted team, both teams are expending rapidly and are recieving top advice on how to develop as players. Both teams are loking forward to playing competetive games in the near future.
