The Mavericks Adults and under 18 teams were at home again on Sunday both needing a win to secure the top of their divisions. The Over 18’s hosted the Sussex Thunder in the Thunders second game since demotion from the Premiership last year and the youth team playing cross county rivals the Kent Exiles.
The youth team got off to a fantastic start with Rich “all day” Bowen returning the opening kick off 60 yards and on the first play of the game braking tackles and spinning across the field before pounding the ball into the end zone. The conversation kick was then no good leaving the score at 6-0 to the Mavericks. The rest of the quarter was a physical battle with Mavericks driving hard but failing to score, until a break away score by the Exiles running back brought the score to 6-6. The start of the second Quarter saw Mavericks QB Gabe Harrison scramble 55 yards on a broken pass play to the endzone followed by a successful conversion by kicker Adam Foster and it looked like the score would be 14-6 to the Mavericks at half time. With just 30 seconds left in the half the Mavericks kicked off only to the see the kick returned 80 yards for a Touch Down by Exiles Running back to leave the score 14-12 to the Mavs at the half
The second half started with the Mavericks fighting hard, the exiles were missing a number of players and the small squad had to play ‘iron man football’ without having the numbers needed to make the necessary substitutions. The Mavericks used this to their advantage and kept running the football at the Exiles defence and using quick passes to wear them down. Three quick Mavericks scores, one by Harry Isaac and a second each for Rich and Gabe secured the game. A late push by the Exiles kept the score line respectable, however, the Mavericks were the clear winners on the Day walking away with a 34-24 victory.
Mavericks head Coach Lenny Button said “I’m extremely proud of the players, we were missing key personnel due to exams this Sunday but proved even with low numbers we can beat the top teams in our Division” The Mavericks Youth team are now joint top of the Division with Colchester who they play next week.
The Mavericks adult game could not have gone worse! The Visiting Sussex team were clear favourites at the start of the game but the Mavericks believed
they were in with a shot. Injuries to key defensive players Craig Hunt and Ollie Bristow, followed by two quick Sussex scores and the Mavericks knew it was going to be a long day. Mavericks Rookie wide receiver Josh 'Colt' Adamson had a career day scoring two touchdowns and catching a number of passes with Linebacker Jake Kennedy Taking a fumble home late in the 4th quarter to leave the final score 42-22 to the visitors.
